Fisherman feared dead after crocodile attack
By Cloe Read
A fisherman is feared dead following a reported crocodile attack in Far North Queensland.
A search is continuing for Kevin Darmody, 65, who went missing in the Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park about 340 kilometres north-west of Cairns at 3.30pm on Saturday.
Darmody, from Laura, on Cape York, was said to have been in distress before bystanders heard a splash near the Kennedy Bend campsite.
“The information provided to the Department of Environment and Science by the missing man’s friend, who was nearby, indicates the man was fishing on the banks of the Kennedy River when there were splashing noises and he disappeared,” the department said.
Darmody was still missing on Sunday, despite an aerial search late on Saturday.
Emergency crews including wildlife officers, police, SES and a rescue helicopter were involved in the search.
Roads leading into the Kennedy Bend section of Rinyirru National Park were closed.
Earlier this month, a man was mauled by a 4.5-metre crocodile in Cooktown while spearfishing.
The 44-year-old escaped by jabbing the crocodile in the eyes after it tried to hold him under the water.
Paramedics said he was bitten three times and dragged to the bottom of the water.
