Socceroos player ratings: How Australia performed in the do or die World Cup qualifier
Andrew Redmayne was the hero of the hour for saving the penalty - his sole contribution in a shootout cameo - but young defender Kye Rowles really took the eye as Australia advanced to another World Cup.
Mat Ryan (GK) - 6
This was a steady performance from the skipper. He didn’t have much to do, he organised the defence, and was beaten once but the ball came back off the post: 6.
Nathaniel Atkinson - 6
He showed improvement after a difficult game against the UAE. He was booked early, which restricted him, but he kept calm and played his part: 6.
Kye Rowles - 8
The youthful central defender played really well, belying his lack of big-time experience. Calm and measured, he made his headers and interceptions and rarely looked out of place: 8.
Bailey Wright - 7
Recalled from the international wilderness, Wright was a calm and physical presence at the back alongside the inexperienced Rowles and helped hold things together at the back: 7.
Aziz Behich - 8
The left wing-back has had some up and down games recently, but was terrific here. Strong defensively, he made timely interceptions and almost scoring a decisive goal: 8.
Ajdin Hrustic - 6.5
He was a standout against the UAE but a bit quieter in this game, where he was unable to provide the incision necessary to unlock the Peruvian rearguard. He scored his penalty calmly: 6.5.
Aaron Mooy - 6.5
He remarkably lasted 120 minutes - although out in his feet in the end - and was a metronomic presence and retained the ball, although neither he nor Hrustic were able to find many clear-cut routes to bisect the Peruvian defence. He scored his penalty to keep Australia in game after the Boyle miss: 6.5.
Martin Boyle - 7
Lively early when his direct running and pace caused problems for the Peruvian backline, he was a threat whenever he got on the ball. He faded in the latter stages and missed a penalty in shootout, but was still a strong performer: 7.
Mat Leckie - 6
He worked hard and embodied the virtues Graham Arnold was demanding - pace, power and physical presence, but few chances came his way: 6.
Jackson Irvine - 6.5
The hard-running midfielder got into good positions and always presented as an option, but unfortunately sent his two best chances - headers - wide: 6.5.
Mitch Duke - 6
A strong presence in the opening half, Duke brought the pugnacity and fighting spirit Arnold had demanded. He had Australia’s first two efforts on goal but made way in the second period: 6.
SUBSTITUTES
Andrew Redmayne - 8.5
The hero of the hour with his decisive penalty shootout save, he played only three minutes of actual game time, so his mark reflects the match winning moment: 8.5.
Awer Mabil - 6.5
He showed plenty of spark when he replaced Duke in the second half and his pace on the flank caused Peru problems. He took his penalty well: 6.5.
Jamie Maclaren - 6.5
He came on for extra time and had few chances but worked hard and slotted his penalty home well: 6.5.
Fran Karacic - 6.5
He replaced Atkinson at the start of extra time. He made some important interventions early, looked calm and unflustered, and did well: 6.5.
Craig Goodwin - 6.5
Goodwin came on late in extra time to take a penalty in the shootout - which he thumped home: 6.5.
