Thanks for joining us on the first day of the new year. We're winding things up now, but we'll be back in the morning to continue our live coverage.
Here's a wrap of the key events from today:
- NSW reported three local cases on Friday – all mystery cases in Sydney's west – with a plea issued for Greystanes, Berala, Auburn and Lidcombe residents to get tested.
- Victoria's border with NSW will close at midnight. There have been massive traffic jams on the border as thousands of people scrambled to get home. Queensland is also monitoring the situation in NSW. You can check our wrap of current border rules.
- Prime Minister Scott Morrison has rejected “very dangerous” calls to rush approvals for a coronavirus vaccine and called for consistency on border closures.
- New Year's Eve went off with a bang in Sydney, albeit a little shorter than usual as fireworks lit up the city skyline. Things were also quieter than usual in Melbourne.
- NSW household gatherings are now limited to five guests in Greater Sydney, Wollongong, the Central Coast and the Blue Mountains. Masks are mandatory indoors again in Victoria where they reported eight new COVID-19 cases.
- South Australia told its people not to "Pash & dash" on New Year's Eve as the state recorded four overseas cases in quarantine. WA logged two cases into quarantine. One man was in court for trying to skip out of quarantine.
We'll be back in the morning – see you then.
