• There are more than 590,000 known infections worldwide and more than 27,000 deaths from COVID-19 but more than 130,000 people have recovered.

Netball players across Australia have been forced to take a 70 per cent pay cut in an effort to keep the sport running.

Sporting codes are grappling with widespread disruption in response to the coronavirus outbreak. The average salary for a Super Netball player in Australia is $67,000, with many on the minimum wage salary of $30,000.

Super Netball chief executive Chris Symington said that while the response from players has been "amazing" the sport is concerned about how clubs will survive if the league is not able to return this year.

"It's fair to say there is a concern across all the clubs, because of the uncertainty of it, they are all at different levels of financial strength," Symington said. "So depending on how long this drags out then, they will all be affected in different ways. As a collective, everyone's concerned."

Accommodation giant Quest has offered all of its 140 hotels across the nation for Australians undergoing mandatory two-week isolation, while turning one of its buildings into a makeshift "health facility" for people suffering with COVID-19.

The 11,000 apartments to be made available under the deal, expected to be signed off in coming days, will represent a major component of the unprecedented effort to house the thousands of Australians returning from overseas who have been ordered into quarantine.

Premier Daniel Andrews said yesterday the state's hotel industry had offered a combined 26,000 beds alone, with about 5000 ready to go from when the mandatory quarantine period came into effect at 12am on Sunday.

Mr Andrews expected between 1000 and 1500 returned travellers to on Sunday begin their mandatory 14-day hotel lockdown, which will be enforced by Victoria Police and supported by Australian Defence Force soldiers.

Police have urged friends and family members of overseas passengers arriving at Sydney International Airport to stay away on Sunday morning.

Travellers due to arrive at the airport at 6am would be processed "discreetly" before being taken to their nominated hotels, NSW Police said in a statement. They will then be able to contact family and friends.

Police said there would not be any areas at the airport where family and friends would be able to see the returned travellers or make contact with them.

"We understand this is unprecedented, but it is a vital step in trying to stop the spread of COVID-19."

The Australian Medical Association's Western Australia president Andrew Miller has criticised a decision by the state and federal governments to use two private Perth hospitals for any COVID-19 patients from the Artania cruise ship as "planning on the run" and said the move would hurt the health system in the long run.

Earlier today WA Premier Mark McGowan said 46 passengers and crew aboard the Artania, which is currently docked in Fremantle, had come down with coronavirus symptoms.

He said any patients with the virus would be sent to Bethesda and Hollywood private hospitals in secured wings to free up the public system for West Australians.

Mr McGowan described the decision as a good solution to a "complex" problem.

Dr Miller said the decision was a political one and not in the best interest of the broader health system.

"It is unclear to us the wisdom of putting them in private hospitals, which have not had any great time to prepare—even less time than the public hospitals," he said.

"They could have gone to be treated like any other human being in our state in one of our public hospitals, which are at a much more advanced stage of preparation in terms of gear as well as for the staff.

"Again this seems to be planning on the run for what seems to have been a pretty predictable problem from a cruise ship. I think everybody knows what happens when cruise ships pull into town."

Dr Miller said the state had now lost two crucial backup hospitals for the public system.

Thirty-three medical professionals who landed at Sydney Airport on a flight from South America on Friday night disobeyed police orders to go into quarantine at an airport hotel and instead headed to the domestic terminal to fly home.

Police Minister David Elliott said he was "disappointed to hear medical professionals chose to ignore rules in place to save lives and protect the most vulnerable in our community". "No one is above the law," Mr Elliott said.

A NSW Police spokesperson said the Australian Federal Police managed to locate six of the 33 medical professionals in the domestic terminal and send them back to quarantine. But the remaining 27 had already departed interstate.

The relevant state or federal police will serve public health orders on those who absconded.

Police are set to patrol the popular Bay Run bike and pedestrian path in Sydney's inner west amid concerns it is getting too crowded, as hordes of people flocking to beaches prompted more closures in the eastern suburbs.

Maroubra beach was shut on Saturday after crowds built up in defiance of social distancing rules. The move followed the closure of Bondi, Bronte and Tamarama beaches last weekend.

Inner West Council mayor Darcy Byrne said his staff and workers from Canada Bay Council were monitoring the 7.5 kilometre Bay Run route, which runs through Rozelle, Lilyfield and Drummoyne.

"I received a lot of reports from people who'd been and said they felt unsafe," Cr Byrne said. "We're seeking to get police patrols down there.

"We want people to keep exercising but it's much better if they go down to the deserted local park or around the block than the place they usually go where there's thousands of other people.

“The Bay Run's one of the busiest thoroughfares in Sydney, but there'll be more places where people usually go to run, walk or cycle where we need those crowds to dissipate."

Two men have been filmed in a physical scuffle, allegedly related to fears about coronavirus, outside a polling booth in Ipswich.

A video was posted on Facebook by a woman named Paige May, who said it was taken at Redbank Plains.

Queensland residents are voting in the state's local government elections and two byelections on Saturday.

"Humans turning against each other from fear of the virus. Very upsetting," Ms May wrote.

The 62nd TV Week Logie Awards will "not proceed as planned" on the Gold Coast in June, Bauer Media said on Saturday.

The television awards ceremony was to be held at The Star casino on June 28.

However, Bauer Media's Fiona Connolly confirmed the organisation was working on a television broadcast alternative.

It's not clear if the event will have an awards ceremony with actors and industry figures in attendance.

"Given the global COVID-19 pandemic the 2020 TV Week Logie Awards will not proceed as planned on the Gold Coast on Sunday, June 28, nor any of the ancillary public events," Ms Connolly said.

"But we will continue with our nominations announcement and online voting campaign and are working with our partners on a TV broadcast alternative and will advise of those details when we have them."

Nominations will still be announced in May but the winners will not be announced on June 28.
