A man has drowned while diving at a beach on the Mornington Peninsula on Christmas Day.

He was with a friend at a popular diving spot just off Cape Schanck Road at the time of the incident, according to police.

Emergency services were called about 6.30pm to reports of a person floating in the water. The man's body was retrieved from the rocks by an emergency helicopter.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

In 2015 two divers went missing at nearby Fingal Beach while a third made it to safety. Human remains were later found near where the 42-year-old man from St Albans and 34-year-old man from Vermont South disappeared.

The incident comes a day after a 45-year-old man and his 20-year-old son drowned at the Colonnades at Phillip Island on Monday.
