$6b for NSW schools to deliver 170 new and upgraded schools

The state government will spend $6 billion over the next four years building schools and upgrading existing ones, creating an extra 2000 classrooms for almost 44,000 more students.

With public school enrolments set to surge by 21 per cent, or 164,000 students, by 2031, the government says next Tuesday's state budget will deliver funding for 170 new or upgraded schools, with planning for 20 to start this year.

The first new primary schools will be for Green Square, Westmead, Rhodes East, Edmondson Park, Gregory Hills and Murrumbateman in the southern tablelands.

There will be a new high school in Edmondson Park, and upgrades to Randwick Boys and Girls, Birrong Boys and Girls, and Cecil Hills High.

Punchbowl Public School will be upgraded while there will be extra teaching spaces for Carlingford West Public and Cumberland High students, the government says.

Carlingford West has more demountables than any other school in NSW, with 35 currently on site.

Work will also start on 40 new and upgraded school projects that have already been announced, while there are 110 ongoing "major school infrastructure" projects underway.

The spending comes as enrolments balloon at Sydney schools, leaving many over capacity and needing to rely on demountables to cope with the unprecedented surge.

Government forecasts show that by 2031 the number of students in NSW government schools will jump from 780,000 in 2016 to 944,500, of which 80 per cent will occur in Sydney.

This will mean an extra 96,500 primary students and 67,500 more secondary students.

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, said next week’s budget would represent the largest investment in schools by any state government in history.

“We are in the midst of a school building program NSW has never before experienced
and this year’s budget takes this to a whole new level,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“I am proud that our government is making this unprecedented investment into
schools and our students.”

The government's commitment means that the projects will deliver more than 43,500 new student places and more than 2000 new permanent classrooms.

The Education Minister, Rob Stokes, said all new and upgraded schools are being designed with sustainability in mind and to accommodate best practice in teaching and learning.

“There is more to do, but we remain dedicated to our goal of offering first-class
education facilities to every student in NSW,” Mr Stokes said.

There will also be a "blitz" on school maintenance, with $160 million to be spent in 2018/19, as part of the $747 million investment over four years announced last year.

The NSW Department of Education released a maintenance audit earlier this year that showed the backlog had been reduced by $200 million, or about a quarter, over an 18-month period.

But the audit said there was still half a billion dollars of work outstanding.

The Treasurer, Dominic Perrottet, said the Government’s strong economic management had allowed it to invest heavily into schools.

“The NSW Government is investing more on school infrastructure over the next four
years than Labor spent in their last 14 years in government," Mr Perrottet said.

“The previous Labor government closed more than 90 schools including Macquarie Boys High, Beacon Hill High, Maroubra High and Redfern Public School.”

Projects already underway are Arthur Phillip High, the Inner Sydney High School, Ballina Coast High, the Hunter Sports High, Oran Park High and Picton High schools.

Parramatta's Arthur Phillip High School will be rebuilt in a 17-storey tower.

A number of primary schools projects are also continuing, including Bardia, Penshust, Gledswood Hills, Ultimo and Jordan Springs.
