Foxtel picks Patrick Delany as its new chief executive

Fox Sports boss Patrick Delany has replaced Peter Tonagh as Foxtel’s chief executive ahead of the merger of the two businesses later this year.

It ends speculation about which CEO will get the top job at the pay TV provider which is under pressure from streaming services and other new entrants threatening its business.

In what may be an indication of the parlous state of Foxtel’s business, it has been made clear that Tonagh will have no role at Foxtel’s majority owner, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.

In a statement to the market, News Corp boss Robert Thomson thanked Tonagh for his service "during years of great change and challenge in the marketplace".

“Patrick’s astute and innovative leadership of Fox Sports, combined with his broad experience during his nine years at Foxtel, make him the ideal person to take the helm at such a profoundly important moment for Foxtel,” said Thomson.

News Corp Australasia executive chairman Michael Miller said that Tonagh’s contributions to Foxtel and News Corp “have helped the companies grow during a time of digital disruption".

Prior to joining Foxtel in March 2016, Tonagh was the CEO of News Corp’s local operations.
