William 'Bill' Spedding faces child sex offences in Victoria

A man previously identified as a person of interest in the disappearance of toddler William Tyrrell is facing historical child sex offences in Victoria.

William "Bill" Spedding is due on Thursday to face Ballarat Magistrates Court for a filing hearing after being charged with several offences by Victorian Police.

The 65-year-old is facing five indecent assault and two sexual intercourse with a child under 10 charges.

It is understood the alleged offences date back to the 1980s and relate to a girl Mr Spedding knew.

Spedding, a white goods repairman from the NSW Mid North Coast, was thrust into the spotlight last year after emerging as a person of interest in the high-profile William Tyrrell investigation.

Three-year-old William disappeared while playing in his grandmother's backyard in the small town of Kendall, near Port Macquarie, on September 12, 2014.

Relentless searches and an extensive homicide investigation has yet to find the little boy in the Spiderman suit.

Spedding was questioned as part of the investigation as he had been in touch with William's grandmother about fixing her washing machine around the time he disappeared.

William Tyrrell was three when he vanished from a home on the NSW Mid North Coast in 2014.

His home at Bonny Hills was turned upside down in a police search and another property in Wellington was targeted but nothing significant was uncovered.Police said at the time their investigations into Mr Spedding became known that it was not a major breakthrough in the case. He was one of dozens of persons of interest in the investigation.

However Mr Spedding has continuously stated he did not go to Kendall on the day William, dressed in a Spider-Man suit, vanished.

He released a YouTube clip last year distancing himself from the allegations: "I wish to state that I have had no involvement whatsoever in the disappearance of William Tyrrell."

This September will mark two years since William disappeared.
