Mother’s day off

At Maggie’s suggestion, they left the house early.

After coffee and babycinos at their local cafe, they boarded a tram, the kids sporting cocoa moustaches that Neil had to photograph.

By the time they arrived at the cinema, Maggie was getting out of bed.

As the kettle boiled, she wiggled to a hummed bar of the Beatles’ Twist and Shout, delighting in her solitude.

As she settled down to binge Happy Valley, her phone pinged.

Neil’s photo of the mustachioed kids – “Mario Bros!” – elicited a pang of guilt, but she steadied herself with a gulp of tea and reached for the remote.
