The first time Jen visited Rohan’s apartment, she gave it the once-over. “Great potential,” she said, unsettling him.

When she moved in months later, she brought her bed, couch, dresser, coffee table, pot plants, knick-knacks and enough clothes to reduce Rohan’s wardrobe allocation by 80 per cent.

Over the following months, the place was painted (“Don’t you just love this yellow, Ro?” ) and new artwork hung on the walls.

“How good does the place look now?” Jen said one night.

Rohan shifted on the stylish but unyielding couch, smiled weakly and ruminated on the mysteries of love.
