Exposure: capturing memories of child's play
While some are stirred by the engraved “love locks” left by sentimental sweethearts on Paris bridges, photographer Steven Siewert found this railway overpass far more moving.
“They seemed to be toys that young children had grown out of and had become obsolete,” Siewert says of this bevy of baubles left by strangers in inner Sydney’s Newtown. “Having children myself, I’ve always found the process of them growing older both to be celebrated for the new adventures and mourned for what has passed – I can’t seem to bring myself to throw or give away their toys.
So this bridge – whatever the reason for the toys being attached – spoke to me in this way, with the sun setting as a stage of a child’s life moved on.”
