New-season fashion trends – with a little inspo from the red carpet (and royalty)

Whole in one

Looking for a multitasker that can really pull its weight as the mercury rises? It’s hard to beat a tank dress in cotton or silk. Colour-block like Zoe Saldana in Fendi at the Savannah Film Festival or keep it monotone and add bold accessories. Bed to beach in five minutes. Venroy “jersey twist” dress, $200.

Clean finish

Australian actor Jacob Elordi has become an accessories trailblazer with his collection of handbags, but he’s also managed to find the correct cut of white jeans – breezy and casual rather than French Riviera gigolo. White shoes are a summer favourite, but can look a touch matronly. Add style points with a twist, like actor Sarah Paulson did in her Marc Jacobs heels in New York last month. Bag it up!

Like Elordi, Last King of the Cross actor Lincoln Younes is also helping remove the stigma of leather handbags for men, the stylish alternative to stuffed suit pockets. Slip-sliding away

Few garments say early-2000s-inspired nonchalance more than a printed silk slip skirt, especially when it’s worn with a white tank or tee. If your budget doesn’t extend to vintage Dior, like the one model Emily Ratajkowski sported in Manhattan recently, hit Depop or any online marketplace for wallet-friendly Y2K finds. Royal shade

The King’s sartorial splendour is usually confined to Savile Row suiting, but on his recent Australian tour, he applied his elevated aesthetics to eyewear, opting for stealth-wealth sunglasses from Moscot. Johnny Depp and Stanley Tucci are also fans of the brand, but Charles’ clear frames with green lenses proved a sovereign choice. Moscot “Lemtosh” sunglasses, $530.

Green light

With the release of the star-studded romp Wicked this month, jade green is casting its spell over fashion. One of the film’s stars, Cynthia Erivo, was spotted in this eye-catching Erdem tunic recently. Pare back with biscuity shades or white for a crisp, Christmas-Day look. Short order

Wicked star and Bridgerton actor Jonathan Bailey joined Gladiator II’s Paul Mescal in championing shorts on the red carpet. Both actors keep their inseams short, but a longer hem admits a summer breeze without the prospect of a wardrobe malfunction. Go for basic black rather than private-schoolboy grey. A touch of class

Everyone loves sparkle at Christmas, but avoid bauble comparisons by steering clear of green or red in favour of a quiet, tailored silhouette. Square dance

The western trend continues, with check shirts riding high on the range. Look for a lighter cotton so you don’t sweat the small stuff, and perhaps follow Ryan Gosling’s lead by wearing a cap instead of a cowboy hat. A white T-shirt will keep you looking fresh – as will a singlet at high noon.

Puff pieces

Bubble hems can be too cutesy for some, but add a floral print and a longer hemline, like The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri in Loewe at the show’s season-three premiere in LA and – bang! – holiday glam is yours. Accessorise with barely-there, ’90s-style sandals. Aje “Behold” dress, $795.

Loafing around

Leather moccasins have become an alternative to sweaty sneakers and slapping thongs for summer-sole protection, with Brit model Jordan Hames making a splash on dry land in boat shoes at the Amiri menswear show in Paris. Two-tone styles have Gatsby flair, but simple, brown leather works timelessly with jeans, chinos and boardshorts. (Speedos need to sit this one out.)
