The Chaser team pull stunts on Malcolm Turnbull: 'I think the feds broke my fall'

The Chaser has made its first appearance on the federal election campaign crashing, in spectacular style, an appearance by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in western Sydney.

Sending up Mr Turnbull's recent allusions to himself as a more trusted leader, comedian Chas Licciardello attempted to enjoin him in a famous trust-building exercise, often known as the trust fall.

Mr Licciardello fell backwards as Mr Turnbull moved towards C1, the Prime Ministerial motor car at the conclusion of a press conference at a local school to announce a program to boost science education.

But Mr Turnbull ignored the comedian's pleas, leaving Mr Licciardello to fall flat on the ground. He was soon surrounded by the Prime Minister's security detail.

Fairfax caught up with the comedian at a later pit stop and he said he remained unhurt despite footage suggesting a jarring fall.

"I was ready for that concussion," Licciardello said. "But I think the feds [security agents] broke my fall to be honest. They were very good humoured about it.

"It's not the first time they've saved me."

In recent debates Mr Turnbull has made much of his being older and more experienced than rival Bill Shorten.

At a later walk through a Westfield shopping centre in Penrith Mr Turnbull got up close and personal with some voters before being ambushed again.

One voter Shane Mundt, said to be a local identity known as the "rat man", because one of the creatures is often found in the hood of his sweatshirt, met the Prime Minister.

Mr Turnbull accepted an invitation to pet the rat, whose name is Splinter, in a nod to the popular '90s show Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

But in a visit to a local coffee shop he was followed, quite literally, by a lifesized cutout of his predecessor, Tony Abbott, brandished by another Chaser comedian Craig Reucassel.

A member of Mr Turbull's security detail attempted to prevent Reucassel from following the Prime Minister and brandishing the cutout, before the comedian issued the rejoinder: "But it's the Abbott-Turnbull government!"

An attempt by members of the Nurses and Midwives' Union to hand flyers out to Mr Turnbull was shut down by shopping centre security.

But local Ann Stacy was moved to tears when meeting him on the way out.

Mrs Stacy said she was also cheered by news Pauline Hanson would be contesting this election.

"He's just excellent," she said. "I can't believe I met him."

The shopping centre is in the western Sydney seat of Lindsay, which is held by MP Fiona Scott on a margin of about 3 per cent.

The Prime Minister pulled out of an earlier plan to walk through a shopping centre in the area, it was later revealed, in favour of an interview with Marie Claire magazine.

The comedians are believed to be running a four-episode election special, beginning June 8.
