Election 2016: Coalition makes scores of appointments in caretaker period countdown
By Heath Aston
It's one way to deliver on the mantra of "jobs and growth".
The Turnbull government has announced more than 50 appointments and reappointments to publicly funded positions in the final hours before the election caretaker period begins, most likely on Sunday.
In one hour on Friday, Coalition ministers announced 28 appointments - or almost one every two minutes.
Six months before the 2013 election, former prime minister Tony Abbott accused Labor of "reaching out from beyond the political grave" by making appointments that began after election day, and then-treasurer Joe Hockey said it "set an awful precedent".
But on Friday, the government named former minister Michael Ronaldson as a director of Australia Post and reappointed chairman John Stanhope.
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has made six diplomatic appointments this week, including new ambassadors to Iran, Vietnam, Jordan, Italy and the Holy See.
Meanwhile, Attorney-General George Brandis has announced 76 appointments to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.
By 3pm on Friday the list of final week appointments and reappointments included:
