Tim Gilbert last host to announce departure from Today amid shake-up

By Amy Croffey

After much speculation, Tim Gilbert is the final presenter to announce his departure from Today.

The sports presenter, 51, who has been part of the breakfast program for the past five years, took to his Twitter account to confirm the news.

"What a beautiful bunch you all are, just confirming [that] Friday will be my last day on the Today show," he wrote.

"We are going to have a blast for the rest of the week like we have [had] for the last five years, it will be nice to unplug the alarm for a while."

Gilbert, who has worked at the Network since 1996, is being replaced by Melbourne sports presenter Tony Jones, 57. It is not yet known what his new role will be.

A number of Gilbert's colleagues sent their well-wishes to the sports journalist, including the newly appointed Today co-host and Karl Stefanovic's replacement, Deborah Knight.

"Tim you are a treasure," she wrote.

David Campbell, the new Today Weekend presenter who takes over from Karl's younger brother Peter Stefanovic, also added his sentiments.

The announcement of Karl's shock axing in December after 14 years on the show, while he was on honeymoon with his second wife Jasmine Yarbrough, kicked off Australia's longest-running breakfast show's shake-up that includes Georgie Gardner, 48, and Knight, 46, as hosts.

Tom Steinfort, 33, will take over newsreader duties from Sylvia Jeffreys, 32, wife of ousted Peter Stefanovic, 37. Jeffreys is to be moved to another, yet to be announced, position at Nine.

ABC journalist and triple j newsreader Brooke Boney, 31, will replace Richard Wilkins, 64, who will present Today Extra with Sonia Kruger on Thursdays and Fridays.

Former 60 Minutes executive producer Steven Burling has taken over from former executive producer from Mark Calvert.

The new team debuts on air on Monday, January 14 in line with Nine's coverage of the Australian Open.

Nine is the owner of this masthead.
