Matt Tilley and Jo Stanley to quit breakfast show on Fox FM

By Michael Lallo

Fox hosts Matt Tilley and Jo Stanley – who have dominated FM breakfast radio over the past decade – will step down at the end of the year.

The pair announced their resignation live on air this morning.

However, a Fox spokeswoman told Fairfax Media that "only the show is wrapping up" and the hosts are "open to other ideas and offers" from the station.

The news comes less than a month after arch-rivals Kate Langbroek and Dave Hughes revealed they would leave Nova in November.

Both stations have been locked in a long-running battle to win the "youth market".

The Matt & Jo Show has topped the FM breakfast ladder for most of its run, though it was recently overtaken by Eddie McGuire's Hot Breakfast on Triple M. Last week, Hughesy & Kate leapfrogged both to claim the No. 1 FM spot.

Fox and Nova are yet to announce their new breakfast teams.

It is not yet known if the other members of The Matt & Jo Show will stay with Fox, including anchor Troy Ellis, gossip guru Adam Richard and executive producer Paul Dowsley.

Stanley admitted her heart was racing when she broke the news to listeners this morning.

"We have formed an extraordinary bond," she told Tilley and Ellis. "I love you both so much."

"Same here," Tilley replied. "And in that bond, we've always had a commitment to go out while it's good. We all know, in this dirty business called radio, often people aren't afforded that luxury, or it's taken away from them ... so it's exciting for us to go, 'Wow. Let's go out with a bang and be grateful for all the wonderful opportunities and this great big audience and all the fun that we all share'."

Tilley started at Fox in the early 1990s. In 1997, after a failed attempt to team him with Judith Lucy, he was partnered with Tracy Bartram in breakfast. The program topped the ratings but the two presenters did not get on.

Tilley has personally raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for children's hospitals through the sale of his comedy CDs and The Matt & Jo Show has raised millions for various charities.

In 2011, Tilley broke his back after a car knocked him off his bike in St Kilda.

Stanley began her radio career hosting a Sunday evening program on Fox before moving to sister station Triple M. In 2003, she replaced Bartram as Tilley's breakfast co-host.

She has also filled in for Kate Langbroek on television chat show The Panel and appears regularly on Ten's The Project.

Her real surname is Bailey but she changed it to avoid confusion with former TV host Jo Silvagni (nee Bailey) and celebrity hairdresser Joh Bailey.

"The Fabulous Adam Richard", as he is known on air, has been a stand-up comedian since the late 1990s. He started his radio career on Triple J under the name "Mister Bitch".

Troy Ellis, the program's long-time anchor, came out live on air last year when a listener asked if he was gay. Ellis is also a familiar face to TV viewers, having hosted the Powerball lottery draw.

More than 500,000 Melburnians listen to The Matt & Jo Show each week.
