Texas bar bans All I Want For Christmas Is You; Mariah has some thoughts
By Jay Cannon
As the calendars flip to November, Mariah Carey’s hit song “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is getting ready to make its annual trip up the streaming rankings.
But not everyone is as ready to embrace the Christmas spirit as the queen of Christmas.
A bar in Dallas riled up some fans and garnered a response from Carey herself after putting a ban on patrons playing her Christmas classic until December 1, at which point it can only be played one time per night.
A picture of a sign on the bar’s jukebox circulated widely on Twitter, motivating some fans to come flocking to Carey’s defence while others, apparently fed up with the song, were more supportive of the bar.
The photo of the jukebox sign at Stoneleigh P got one Twitter user to jokingly ask if this is the so-called “war on Christmas” that some have decried over the years.
That was enough for Carey to join in on the discussion, coming in ready to fight for her world-famous Christmas tune.
The bar’s general manager, who told CNN that they’ve put up the sign for a few years now, doesn’t have anything against Carey — it’s just that the song gets overplayed.
“I don’t hate Mariah Carey, and I don’t hate Christmas,” the general manager said in a video interview with CNN.
She said the sign was meant to be taken in a lighthearted way, but that doesn’t stop staff from springing into action when they hear the song.
“Once we hear those twinkles, we run for the remote,” she said in the interview.
Carey, who graced the world with All I Want For Christmas Is You 27 years ago, again took to social media first thing Monday to let everyone know “it’s time” for the holiday season.
She posted a video in which she walks out of her front door wielding a candy cane-striped baseball bat as a clock chimes. Three pumpkins outside are carved to read “IT’S NOT TIME,” but the pop icon smashes the middle one as her 1994 Christmas classic begins playing.
“It’s time,” she singsongs, holding up Christmas ornaments while showing off a sparkly red Santa-inspired getup complete with white fur trim and a black belt with a gold buckle.
Other than kicking off the holidays early, Carey appeared to be teasing more presents to come: “11/5” was marked on one gift, which could hint at something new coming Friday.
