ClearVue ready to roll on paradigm-shifting solar glazing products
Brought to you by BULLS N’ BEARS
By Doug Bright
ClearVue Technologies is ready to roll out a full range of its breakthrough solar façade products, which promise to transform a glazed building into a solar photovoltaic array.
The company’s fully certified range, including cladding and spandrels, is ready to order and be deployed in projects immediately.
ClearVue Technologies’ vacuum-insulated solar glazing was installed at the headquarters of Hong Kong’s electrical and mechanical services department.
Supporting the roll-out, ClearVue today released the results of a comprehensive trial of its solar façade product in the headquarters of Hong Kong’s Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD).
The trial, which began in July 2024, suggests a 4.6-year payback period before subsidies for ClearVue’s solar vacuum-insulated façade. When Hong Kong’s feed-in tariff is included, the panels pay for themselves in 2.6 years.
The solar glazing units will remain a permanent part of the Hong Kong headquarters and will be monitored for a further 12 months.
‘These remarkable independently captured results demonstrate the significant impact ClearVue solar VIG can have on driving a sustainable built environment.’
ClearVue interim global chief executive officer Douglas Hunt
The company applied the trial results to a hypothetical 40-storey building with a 50 per cent window-to-wall ratio, considering the local weather conditions in 15 cities.
The assessment showed ClearVue’s integrated solar façade could offset between 74 per cent and 125 per cent of the building’s annual energy requirements, advancing the path to net-zero buildings.
The Hong Kong trial tested ClearVue’s innovative vacuum-insulated solar glazing (VIG) unit, developed in a strategic partnership with LandGlass Technology subsidiary LandVac.
The glazing unit achieved a market-leading U-value of 0.58 and a 7.74°C lower internal surface temperature during peak heat compared to standard windows.
The U-value is a standard measure of insulation quality in windows, representing the temperature difference between the inside and outside panes.
A good U-value for windows typically falls between 0.20 and 1.6 watts per square metre Kelvin temperature (W/m²K), where lower values indicate better insulation and energy efficiency. Triple-glazed windows can achieve lower U-values, potentially below 0.8W/m²K.
The vacuum-insulated units also meet strict international fire safety standards, meaning they can be used in high-rise buildings and high-risk environments such as hospitals, schools and hotels.
Commenting on the successful trial, ClearVue interim global chief executive officer Douglas Hunt said: “These remarkable independently captured results demonstrate the significant impact ClearVue solar VIG can have on driving a sustainable built environment.”
Hunt said the outstanding results prove ClearVue’s solar glazing and its fully integrated solar façade could deliver significant energy savings and generate power, directly addressing the twin needs of sustainable building design and energy efficiency.
He added that short payback periods made deploying the company’s solutions a logical choice. “Combined with its existing fire testing results, the successful completion of this trial with the Hong Kong Government’s EMSD is a major validation of ClearVue’s technology,” he said.
Asian markets – particularly Hong Kong - are key targets for ClearVue. The company will be able to use the trial as a powerful, government-verified case study for architects, developers and building owners in the region.
ClearVue will also capitalise on the encouraging results by launching a Hong Kong subsidiary and establishing an R&D joint venture with LandVac, which has developed an advanced vacuum-insulated glazing product.
Earlier this month, ClearVue appointed Hunt as its new chief operating officer to serve as the company’s interim global CEO. With certifications in place, ClearVue is poised to accelerate commercialisation, leveraging its technology to transform glass buildings into solar PV arrays.
ClearVue’s solar façade is lighting the way to sustainable buildings, blending cutting-edge energy generation with safety and efficiency to redefine urban construction.
