 Senior NT cop facing serious charges

Acting Senior Sergeant Neil Mellon, one of the NT’s most experienced police officers, is facing a raft of serious charges after a six-month investigation.
Sgt Mellon has been charged with 31 offences, including destroying evidence and attempting to pervert the course of justice in an ongoing major crash investigation.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Michael White said a search warrant was executed at Sgt Mellon's home, where illegal wildlife, fireworks and firearms were allegedly seized.
Sgt Mellon was among three Territory officers charged on unrelated matters within 24 hours. Acting DC White said NT police made no apologies for investigating their own.
Sgt Mellon joined NT Police in 1995 and worked the beat in Alice Springs and Darwin before forging a distinguished career.
He is the longest serving member of the elite Territory Response Group after spending 15 years with the emergency squad, which is often on the frontline of dangerous police operations.
In this role, Sgt Mellon was also entrusted to protect dignitaries, including the Dalai Lama and former US President Barack Obama, during visits to the NT.
In 2016, Sgt Mellon was awarded for “outstanding professionalism, bravery and ­exceptional operational support” for his role in the rescue of a tourist who fell while climbing Uluru.
He was also awarded the Australian Police Medal as part of the Australia Day Honours in 2019.
