$747m Defence splash to bring jobs bonanza

Words:  Camden SmithProducer: Andrew  Piva

The Northern Territory is set for a significant jobs boost with four Defence training areas in the Top End to soon undergo $747 million worth of upgrades.

About 2000 jobs over five years will be supported during the federal government’s upgrades at Robertson Barracks, Kangaroo Flats, Mount Bundey and Bradshaw.

The federal government has about $5.1bn in capital facilities projects either in development or being delivered in the Territory as part of an $8bn investment over the next decade.

Defence Industry Minister Melissa Price said the upgrade projects would have major economic benefits for the Territory.

This is a major win for small and local businesses across Northern Australia, who will be given every opportunity to get involved in this vital Defence project.

NT company Sitzler had been engaged as managing contractor for the upgrades project, with the majority of the subcontracting roles going to businesses in Northern Australia.

The upgrades are a critical component of the US Force Posture Initiatives - a relationship that sees US Marines regularly participate in military defence exercises in the Top End.

In the last financial year Defence’s investment of more than $336m in Territory infrastructure represented more than 24 per cent of their total new investment in new Defence facilities.

Construction works will start at Robertson Barracks close training area and Bradshaw first, with staggered works at Kangaroo Flats and Mount Bundey to follow later.
