Life of legendary NT cattleman remembered

Tributes have flowed for NT cattleman James ‘Jimmy’ Hayes following his death, aged 76. The proud Territorian lived an extraordinary life that included brushes with royalty and Hollywood stars. This is how he became a Top End legend.

Jimmy, also affectionately known as Jimpy, was raised on his family’s cattle station, Undoolya, which covers 13,500 square kilometres of the Territory outback.

A fourth-generation cattleman, Jimmy told the NT News in 2021 that working the land was in his blood.

I grew up in the pastoral industry. It’s all I’ve ever known. I’ve only ever worked for two people – my old man (Ted Jnr.) and myself.

Through all of the adversity of drought, market fluctuations, and the natural hardships of life on the land, Jimmy went on to become one of Australia’s greatest ever cattlemen.

His name became synonymous with the industry and the Territory, along with his larger-than-life personality that charmed some of the world’s most famous people.

Jimmy met Queen Elizabeth II’s late husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, and welcomed their daughter Princess Anne for a horse ride at Undoolya.

His property also hosted the 1st Earl of Snowdon, Antony Armstrong-Jones, while he was still married to the Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret.

The Earl was making a film, Ten Who Dared – The Explorers: Burke & Wills, and gave Jimmy a role as the leader of the search party.

It wasn’t his only brush with the film industry. Jimmy also hosted star Tom Selleck while he filmed the 1990 movie Quigley Down Under at the station.

But most important to Jimmy was his family. He married the love of his life, Gail, in 1965 and together had four children: Richie, Andy, Jayne and Benny.

Remembering his late father, Andy said his dad was a man “never afraid of a hard day’s work”, who applied his ethic to every venture.

He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone, but mostly to the younger generation because he would always say ‘they are our future’.
