Huge spike in NT drug use

The latest national drug use survey has shown a more than five percentage point jump in recent drug use in the NT, the largest increase across the federation.The rising popularity of drug use was driven by marked increases in the popularity of two substances in particular hallucinogens, cannabis and ketamine - according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s National Drug Strategy Household Survey 2022–23.The survey says, since 2019 the proportion of Territorians who had used illicit substances in the previous 12 months jumped from 19.6 per cent to 25.2 per cent.The substances that saw the largest increase in recent use among Territorians between 2019 and 2022–23 were cannabis (up 3 per cent), hallucinogens (up 2.2 per cent), painkillers and opioids (up 2.1 per cent), cocaine (up 1.1 per cent) and ketamine (up 1 per cent).
