Battle to save Lee Point heats up

Words: Nathaniel ChambersProducer: Andrew Piva

Darwin Council has passed a motion urging the NT government to put a freeze on development at Lee Point in Darwin's northern suburbs.

Work at the site has already begun, with heavy machinery clearing land to create space for 800 Defence homes.

But there have been growing calls from the community to stop the development at one of Darwin's last major natural bushland sites.

A council motion was submitted calling for Lands, Planning and Environment Minister Eva Lawler to freeze work at the location.

The motion stated the Territory Government should place a moratorium on the development until a plan is developed that reflects community wishes.

It comes after Chief Minister Michael Gunner said it was too late to stop works and the development was a done deal.

Alderman Rebecca Want De Rowe, who submitted the motion with Justine Glover, says the Lee Point plans went against council’s Green Darwin Strategy.

I am not against development in any way, but I am against development here at Lee Point. Our open spaces have never been more important and this is the coolest place in Darwin.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis stood against the motion, but the rest of council stood in support, a move applauded by community members attending the meeting.
