For the past seven days the NT News online site, ntnews.com.au, has been asking each of the major parties — Labor, the CLP and Territory Alliance — where they stand on one particular issue each day, one issue that Territorians have had strong opinions about in the past.

Now, in our last instalment of what the PARTIES think about seven ‘hot button’ issues compared to what YOU think about them, we are instead asking each party what they think is the single biggest issue facing Territorians at this election.

What you want v What the major parties want > The issue: Open speed limits

What you want v What the major parties want > The issue: The BDR

What you want v What the major parties want > The issue: Reinstating NT euthanasia laws

What you want v What the major parties want > The issue: Legalising cannabis in the NT

What you want v What the major parties want > The issue: Climate change

What you want v What the major parties want > The issue: Fracking in the NT

We are also asking you, our readers, the same question so that you can voice your own opinion in our online poll.

That way we can gauge what the parties think compared to what you, the voter thinks.

Today’s topic: WHAT IS THE SINGLE BIGGEST ISSUE FACING TERRITORIANS AT THIS ELECTION?

ALP

Q. What does Territory Labor believe is the biggest single issue facing Territorians at this election?

A. Keeping Territorians safe and protecting their jobs is the most significant issue facing the Territory today.

Q. Explain Territory Labor’s policy on keeping Territorians safe and protecting their jobs

A. The Territory is the safest place in Australia and we are going to keep it that way by keeping our borders secure.

Our hard border controls are still there – we have cops on borders and in airports, forced quarantine for hot spots, and tough consequences for rule-breakers.

When the CLP wanted to open our borders to Victoria in June – we said NO.

The election is a choice between keeping our borders secure, or the CLP’s dangerous open borders policy which would put Territorians’ lives at risk.

Territory Labor will keep putting the Territory first by doing whatever it takes to save lives and save jobs.

Now is not the time to risk it all by going back.

Going back to the CLP means open borders, higher power prices and asset sales.

Q. What does the CLP believe is the biggest single issue facing Territorians at this election?

A. The economy

Q. Explain the CLP’s policy on fixing the Territory’s economy

A. The Country Liberal Party has a plan to rebuild the Territory economy after four years of Labor and create long-term sustainable job opportunities for Territorians.

The CLP will slash government approvals timeframes by 50 per cent to give business the shot in the arm it needs to get projects going.

The CLP will create an independent Territory Coordinator to get large scale job creating projects going.

The CLP will simplify mining tax to encourage investment in new mines that will create jobs.

The CLP will grow a sustainable onshore gas industry and create an industrial manufacturing hub at Middle Arm.

The CLP has a vision and a plan to make the Northern Territory the best place in the world to run a business and invest.

With that vision and plan will come jobs and a more prosperous Northern Territory with opportunities for all.

TERRITORY ALLIANCE

Q. What does Territory Alliance believe is the biggest single issue facing Territorians at this election?

A. Labor incompetence

Q. Explain Territory Alliance’s policy to fix the issues it believes have been caused by the current Labor Government

A. Labor had plunged the Territory into economic crisis before the pandemic hit.

Businesses closed, jobs lost, debt spiraling to $8bn.

Labor didn’t listen to Territorians. They wasted money on spin and slogans while Territorians left in droves to chase jobs.

Property prices plummeted. Vacant shops appeared across our city, suburbs and towns. Territorian’s livelihoods were literally lost and crime soared. Public servants working harder while executive salaries increased.

Territory Alliance will rebuild the Territory by being at the table with business, non-government organisations, Aboriginal organisations and the Commonwealth.

Time for change and swift action to deliver opportunities for our beautiful Territory.
