CONCERNS over the ratio of CCTV operators to cameras has been raised by the Community & Public Sector Union.
NT secretary Kay Densley said the rapid increase in cameras across the NT had not been reflected in an increase in staff to monitor them.
She said the issue had been raised since 2019.

“The industry recommendation for the effective live monitoring of CCTV cameras is 25- 50 cameras per operator,” she said. She said if the government wanted to be taken seriously on crime then they needed to have more staff to monitor the cameras.
NT Police Commander David Proctor said there were 20 operators with the unit having access to 831 cameras, some of which were not required to be monitored 24/7. He said they constantly assessed staffing levels.
“The NT Police CCTV unit is well equipped to detect, responding to and investigate crime and anti-social behaviour,” he said.

“The NT Police undertake a continuous assessment process to ensure staffing levels are in line with demand.“
