Willie Rioli tests positive for banned substance

TERRITORY footy star Willie Rioli will face court in Darwin on Wednesday after he was allegedly busted with cannabis at the Darwin Airport.

NT Police said the 25-year-old West Coast Eagles forward was screened by a drug detection dog on April 23 and a subsequent search allegedly turned up 25 grams of the drug.

Rioli was charged with possessing less than a trafficable quantity of a schedule 2 substance in a public place.

The alleged bust comes three months before Rioli was set to return to the field after being suspended for producing an adverse analytical finding for urine substitution in 2019.

In September of that year, the AFL announced Rioli had tested positive for a metabolite of cannabis after the Eagles’ elimination final win over Essendon.

His ban was due to expire on August 20 this year.
