A TEENAGER accused of hitting a woman with his car at more than 160km/h before leaving her for dead on the side of the road has been freed on bail until he returns to court in June.
Jack West, now aged 20, is contesting a hit-and-run driving causing death charge in the Supreme Court following the incident outside Humpty Doo on Territory Day 2018.
West applied for bail this week after his scheduled May trial was postponed due to the suspension of jury trials amid the coronavirus crisis.
COURT
In granting the application on Friday, Chief Justice Michael Grant warned West not to repeat the mistakes he made the last time he was released on bail.
“On various occasions, you didn’t charge your (electronic monitoring) device, you didn’t answer your mobile phone when corrections were trying to make contact with you and you breached curfew,” he said.
“That can’t happen on this occasion, you’re being given an opportunity here and you need to take responsibility for your actions and start to grow up now.
“If any of those things happen on this occasion I will revoke your bail and I will send you back to prison, you understand that?”
West replied: “Yes, your honour, it won’t happen.”
