A “SERIOUS” crash which saw three people hospitalised, including two who are in a critical condition, closed off the Stuart Hwy for more than six hours on Saturday night.

NT Police Southern Watch Commander Darrell Kerr said in Alice Springs last night, one car had hit another that was stationary at a set of traffic lights, before rolling and trapping the driver and passengers.

“There was a serious motor vehicle crash on Wills Tce and Stuart Hwy about 8pm last night, a two vehicle crash,” he said.

“A Kia Carnival was stationary at the traffic lights on Stuart Hwy and Wills (Tce) and the other vehicle, the Commodore, was travelling inbound.

“The Commodore had rolled after hitting the stationary Carnival at the lights and the occupants of the Commodore were trapped inside.”

Cmdr Kerr said the road was block off for almost six and a half hours as emergency services responded to the scene.

“Police, fire (fighters) and St Johns attended, they had to cut the driver, out,” he said.

“At this stage, we’ve got three people at hospital, two of them in serious conditions and one of them, there are facial injuries being reassessed,” he said.

“We had the Stuart Hwy blocked until about 2.20am (Saturday) morning when it was reopened.”
