CYBER criminals have attempted to steal more than $50,000 from Territory businesses with phony invoices.

Northern Territory Police investigating the cybercrime offences have again warned Northern Territory Businesses to be vigilante with their payment and accounting systems.

Detective Sergeant Craig Windebank said fake emails that appear to contain legitimate invoices or directions to make payment are being sent to businesses.

“The invoices include instructions to send funds to a direct bank account.

“The emails are difficult to distinguish and are often quite sophisticated.”

He said in the latest cases quick action was taken and some of the funds have been recovered.

Police said to help protect your personal or business accounts ensure the following:

•Have good business practices

•Confirm large payments or changes to payments through a phone call

•Ensure business systems are up to date and secure

“The internet is an integral part of our modern lifestyle but at the same time we need to be aware of the risks and take steps to be safe while online,” Detective Sergeant Craig Windebank said.

“This is a warning that online offenders continue to target Northern Territory businesses.

Police said cybercrime victims should report it to police through cyber.gov.au or for more information to protect yourself online, visit becybersmart.nt.gov.au

Close to 60,000 cybersecurity reports were filed to the Australian Cyber Security Centre during 2019-20. Cybersecurity incidents have the potential to cost the economy $29 billion per year.
