POLICE took at least 40 minutes to respond to a brutal bashing in which a man was reportedly knocked unconscious, beaten with weapons and stomped on in Karama on Wednesday night.

A nearby resident told the NT News the fight spilled out onto the street on Pelham Court on Wednesday evening.

“It took an hour after my first call for the police to arrive and an hour and a half for the ambulance,” they said.

“That whole time me and my partner had to listen to the sound of a man being beaten with a large rock right in front of my property.”

An NT Police spokeswoman said a complaint was received at about 9.20pm and officers responded about 40 minutes later.

“Officers from Darwin station attended as Casuarina station were engaged with other jobs,” she said.

“Police arrived at the scene about 40 minutes after the report. The parties involved are known to each other. The matter is being investigated by police.”

A spokeswoman for St John Ambulance said paramedics attended and took one man to hospital.

It comes as about 100 residents of Karama and neighbouring Malak attended a community forum hosted by local member Ngaree Ah Kit on Thursday night to address lengthy response times to reported crime in the area.

Urban Housing deputy chief executive Jim Bamber used the forum to respond to several concerns raised by attendees about anti-social behaviour at local public housing blocks.

“I understand the suburbs of Karma and Malak has about 600 public houses,” one Malak resident said.

“I feel as if our whole neighbourhood has been socially engineered to be a slum.”

Mr Bamber said his department had been “much more careful” with who it selected to move into public housing.

He encouraged locals to file formal complaints against problem tenants.
