NORTHERN Territory police refused to confirm they were investigating the cocaine sex scandal allegations to the NT News despite the woman at the centre of the scandal confirming they are.

The woman, on radio interviews on Wednesday morning, confirmed she had spoken to the police about the allegations.

The NT News first called police media about the allegations last Friday, however, a response was not received.

It was not until yesterday that police media director Rob Cross responded to the NT News after a series of written questions.

The NT News emailed at 12.40pm: “re: the much reported “cocaine sex scandal” involving two Territory Labor party members including a sitting a MLA, the NT News understands that NT Police’s Special References Unit is looking into the matter.

1) Can NT Police confirm that the SRU has become involved in the matter?

2) And if an investigation is now open, if NT Police could confirm that the concern is about those involved, particularly the sitting MLA, being vulnerable to acts of blackmail or otherwise?

Mr Cross, on behalf of the police and Commissioner Jamie Chalker, responded at 3.27pm with one line, saying: “NT Police won’t be commenting.”

NT News editor Matt Williams said the response from police was perplexing.

“It is concerning that police wouldn’t confirm they were looking into the matter when they clearly were,” he said.

“The woman involved has now said she had spoken to the police about it.

“It also makes you wonder what level of political interference was involved before the police sent us their comment on Tuesday that they won’t be commenting.”
