POLICE have been left shaking their heads after pulling over a ute with four young children lying in the tray and an 18-month-old unrestrained in the cabin on the Victoria Hwy.

Senior Sergeant Paul Faustmann said the “frustrating” incident highlighted the importance of playing it safe on the roads, particularly as school holidays get under way.

Sr Sgt Faustmann said traffic cops were patrolling the highway between Timber Creek and Katherine when they saw the Nissan Patrol’s driver not wearing a seatbelt.

When they pulled the 22-year-old over, they found four children aged between seven and 10 laying in the tray and four other people, including the toddler, unrestrained inside.

Police fined the driver, and two passengers aged 16 and 18 who were not wearing seatbelts.

Sr Sgt Faustmann said 40 per cent of fatal and serious crashes involved people not wearing seatbelts.

“This is compounded by the fact that 71 per cent of fatalities occur on rural and remote roads,” he said.

“.... we expect to see more people out on our roads as they explore the Territory.

“With this in mind, we implore road users in the Territory to work together and share the responsibility to reduce death and serious injury on our roads.”
