POLICE are in the process of tracking down a teenager in Tennant Creek after another shocking allegation of child sexual abuse in the outback town.

NT Police Crime Commander Martin Dole said the alleged assault occurred late last week but the 7-year-old victim had to be flown to Alice Springs for medical attention so police were only able to take a statement from her on Sunday morning.

“The offender is known in (relation to) those circumstances and detectives are making moves to apprehend that person this afternoon,” he said.

“We hadn’t actually had any opportunity to speak to that child so we didn’t have sufficient information to (understand) exactly what occurred so we wanted to wait till we had an opportunity to interview that child.”

Cmdr Dole said while the alleged offender was still at large, he was understood to be a family member of the little girl and there was no danger to the wider community.

“It’s not a matter where we had an outstanding offender that was at large in the community that was unknown,” he said.

“Until we got the full details of the offending we weren’t in a position to take any action but that occurred this morning and we’re making moves to arrest that offender this afternoon.”
