POLICE believe three men, who knew each other, got into a fight which escalated when a 38-year-old man got behind the wheel of a 4WD and drove at the others, sending one of them to hospital.
Detective Senior Constable Richard Musgrave of the Serious Crime Unit addressed media in relation to an incident on Darwin’s Mitchell St when the 38-year-old reportedly drove into a crowd of people and then ploughed into the Six Tanks Brew Co. pub at around 3am this morning.
The 38-year-old driver of the car is in police custody with a third man, aged 36, currently assisting police with their inquiries.
The 25-year-old man who was struck by the car, and was also believed to have been involved in the fight leading up to the incident, was taken to hospital with leg and back injuries.
He is in a stable condition in hospital and is also in police custody.
Sen Constable Musgrave said it is believed that the fight started inside a licenced premises before spilling out onto Mitchell St.
The 38-year-old is then believed to have gotten into his vehicle and driven down Mitchell St before swerving at the group and crashing into the entrance of Six Tanks.
Sen Constable Musgrave said charges are not likely to be laid until tomorrow because of the large amount of witnesses that need to be spoken to today.
He also emphasised that the incident is not being investigated as an act of terrorism.
“To be clear, this is not part of a terror investigation, it is a criminal investigation only,” he said.
All three of the men believed to have been involved have been tested for drug and alcohol and police are awaiting results.
