Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker confirmed police are investigating after a registered sex offender was reportedly caught outside the Darwin bedroom of a young girl with a “rape kit.”
The NT Independent reported this morning that the man was arrested by police earlier this month after he was seen outside the girl’s window after she told her parents a man had been in her bedroom.
According to the report, police found the man to be in possession of a “rape kit” that included a balaclava, tape, plastic ties and other paraphernalia.
When asked about the incident at a press conference this morning, Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker said he could confirm there was an investigation underway.

“Detectives have had carriage of this matter from Darwin and are continuing to advise the media unit as to their preferences to how that’s dealt with,” he said.
“What we’re doing here is making sure that the detectives, who are some of the best in the country, I might add, have the appropriate reign to make a decision on their investigation, so they can ensure utmost operational protection and ensure the protection of the victim.
“For that specific matter, I’ll have to see further advice as to why they made that decision, but I’m certainly backing them that they’ve made the right decision because that’s what they do each and every day.”
The NT Independent reported the eight-year-old girl had informed her parents that a man wearing a mask had been in her room after the first night it occurred.
“After arresting the man, investigators searched his phone and discovered video taken from inside the child’s room on different occasions, including on one occasion where he hid behind the bedroom door when the child’s father had opened it to check on her,” they reported.
“Other videos showed he had filmed the girl as she lay in her bed, forcing his hands inside pyjamas that fit the pattern of the girl’s pyjamas.
“The man, a registered sex offender from Queensland, lived in close proximity to the victim.”
Police media did not respond to the NT Independent’s questions on the issue.

The Gunner Government has banned the fledgling online media outlet from press conferences.
Other government agencies, including police, largely ignore their questions.
The NT News has editorialised that the ban should be lifted in the interests of democracy, public safety and government transparency.
The government has banned the media outlet, edited by former NT News reporter Christopher Walsh, because it is owned by businessman Owen Pike.
The government claims Mr Pike runs a Facebook “hate” page — Gumment The Lover — against Chief Minister Michael Gunner as the main reason why they have banned the outlet.
