NT Police have been sent to the Queensland/Territory border with two Covid cases being

detected on the Sunshine Coast yesterday.

In a statement released on Thursday morning, NT Police announced a Covid control point has been re-established on the Barkly Highway.

“Police will continue to monitor the South Australian border but there are no cases in that state and there remains a hard border with Victoria providing the Territory with an extra layer of protection,” the statement said.

It comes as four travellers into the NT from Victoria have been fines for failing to lodge border entry forms.

Two cars with Victorian registration were captures crossing into the NT yesterday after leaving Victoria on May 30.

A/Commander Sachin Sharma said they had not been in a hotspot at that time and were not subject to any quarantine rules.

“It must be made clear that these infringements have been issued for not lodging the required travel forms. Each traveller has been fined $5056,” he said.

“NT Police have deployed automatic number plate recognition systems and conduct compliance checks on a regular basis. It beggars belief that individuals have taken such a casual approach towards legal requirements imposed by the NT chief health officer.”

The same travellers had been picked up by WA police the day before and were issued infringements for failing to lodge the required travel forms for that state.

It comes after a Melbourne couple tested positive to Covid-19 on the Sunshine Coast. The pair had left quarantine to drive from Victoria, through New South Wales and to Queensland.

Opposition leader Lia Finocchiaro said it was puzzling that borders were only being enforced now.

“Yet during the entire period of the most recent Victorian hotspot, we have had no support on our borders to make sure that people from Victoria are not getting through,” Ms Finocchiaro said.

She said “there were a lot of questions around” the automatic number plate recognition system that had been monitoring the borders.
