A 45-year-old man has been seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle in Berrimah on Thursday evening.

The incident occurred about 5.15pm at the Northcrest intersection on the Stuart Highway.

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said the pedestrian involved was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition where he remains.

A NT Police spokeswoman said the man had sustained serious head and abdominal injuries.

It is believed he was hit by a 4WD vehicle and was alone at the time.

Police said the man got off a bus and attempted to walk across the road when he was hit.

The 25-year-old driver stopped to help the man.

He was subjected to roadside tests for alcohol and drugs and returned negative results.

Police said he is helping police with inquiries.

The incident resulted in a road closure being put in place for the inbound lanes on Stuart Highway between Berrimah Road and Tivendale Road, including the intersection into the Northcrest housing development.
