AN Alice Springs teenager will spend at least three years in detention after he “wreaked havoc” on the life of a woman who he brutally raped and assaulted at her own workplace.

The survivor of the assault said she still wakes up feeling anxious every day and struggles to focus on work.

“It was horrible and scary and disgusting. At no point until he left that room did I know it was not going to escalate,” she said.

At the time of the attack in December 2019, the victim was finishing up work when she heard someone knock at the back door.

The victim slammed the door after she saw the offender standing outside with his pants down but he managed to shove the door open again.

The offender, who can’t be named for legal reasons, overpowered the victim and forced her into a series of degrading acts which are too graphic to publish.

Justice Jenny Blokland said it was a revolting experience that “wreaked havoc” on the life of the victim.

“It has caused detriment to her mental health, wellbeing, and sense of personal security.

“For the first time, she has questioned whether she will continue to live in Alice Springs.

“She also states she is thankful to the people she describes as amazing people who have supported her, friends, family, the Sexual Assault Referral Centre, and the Witness Assistance Service.

“She is hoping the next chapters of everyone’s lives can be more positive.”

The teenager, who was 15 at the time of the offending, pleaded guilty to rape and unlawful entry.

The Alice Springs Supreme Court heard the offender, who suffers from foetal alcohol spectrum disorder, was on a bond ordered by the youth justice court at the time of the offending.

“As a younger person, he experienced significant disruption in his life apart from already suffering the effects of being exposed to alcohol in utero,” Ms Blokland said.

“This was clearly a most aggressive sexual assault. The whole episode must have been terrifying for the victim.”

The teenager was sentenced to six years in detention with a non-parole period of three years.
