Cattle industry ‘vindicated’ by federal court ruling

A PERSON has been charged with hundreds of offences relating to cattle duffing in what is the first major investigation breakthrough by Taskforce Starlight.

The Sunday Territorian understands a person has been charged with more than 400 offences relating to the theft of cattle in the NT.

It’s understood the value of the allegedly stolen cattle could be as high as $500,000.

Affected station owners claim a neighbour was behind the alleged theft.

One station owner, who did not want to be named, said they had had suspicions for several years that their cattle was being stolen.

“Because there’s been no real dedicated stock squad and the speed you need to move to catch someone is difficult and we hope this time NT Police move quickly and prosecute to the full extent of the law,” the station owner said.

The station owner called for the taskforce to DNA test each beast at the station where the alleged cattle was found in order to completely know how many cattle had potentially been taken over the years.

NT Cattlemen’s Association chief executive Will Evans said the taskforce, which was set up in March was a win for the industry.

“This reinforces the importance of the taskforce for the NTCA; we remain committed to a long-term solution with dedicated resources provided to address stock theft in the NT,” he said.
