AN 18-year-old has been fined $360 and had his car impounded after police spotted him driving dangerously in wet conditions in Alice Springs overnight.
NT Police Southern Watch Commander Shaun Furniss said the car had lost traction and was edging close to an accident when it attracted the attention of police.
“At about 6.10pm last night, an 18-year-old male was driving a black Holden utility, heading south on Telegraph Tce away from the Alice Springs CBD,” he said.
“He then turned right onto Espie Street. Whilst making this turn he accelerated heavily, causing the rear wheels of the utility to lose traction.

“The heavy acceleration continued as the vehicle entered Espie Street, this caused the vehicle to fishtail.”
Snr Sgt Furniss said patrols had acted quickly to stop the P-plater from causing damage to himself or other road users.
“A police patrol following the vehicle, observed the driver’s actions and stopped the vehicle,” he said.
“Upon speaking to the driver, it was also determined he was failing to display P-plates.
“As a result of his reckless behaviour, the 18-year-old’s vehicle has been impounded for 48 hours and he has received $360.00 in fines.”

Snr Sgt Furniss said it was disappointing to see an inexperienced driver not adhering to conditions.
“Again, road users need to take care in the wet conditions Central Australia is experiencing at present,” he said.
“Whist the driver was blaming the wet road and the vehicle being high-powered, he did have the choice to take his foot off the accelerator. He chose not to.”
