A MAN accused of raping a toddler while he was playing in his front yard in Darwin has not applied for bail during his second court appearance this morning.
The 21-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in the dock of the Darwin Local Court wearing an orange prison jumper on Tuesday.
He was arrested and charged with sexual intercourse without consent in relation to the incident where he allegedly approached the three-year-old boy as he played in the front yard of his home on Thursday evening and attacked him.
The man’s lawyer, James Stuchbery, said his client’s charges had been explained to him with the assistance of an interpreter from the Aboriginal Interpreter Service – the purpose of the case’s adjournment yesterday.

Mr Stuchbery asked for the matter to be moved to the committal list as the charge is legally required to be committed to the Supreme Court.
He did not make an application for bail.
A member of the NT Police also attended court for the mention.
The man will next return to court on May 12.
