ZEBEDEE DUDGEON: Made off with a charity shop couch

Darwin artist and film producer Zebedee Dudgeon avoided a conviction last year for stealing a $400 couch from a Stuart Park charity shop due to his “health situation” and “intoxication”.

The 31-year-old pleaded guilty in the Darwin Local Court in December to one count of stealing after pinching the settee from the St Vincent de Paul shop in October.

The court heard Dudgeon visited the shop at about midday on October 2 and “browsed for a short period of time” before leaving and returning soon after “with a two-wheeled removalist trolley”.

“At approximately 12.10pm the defendant loaded a blue two-seater couch located at the front entrance of the store onto the trolley,” prosecutor Luke McLaughlin said.

“The defendant left the location with the couch, making no attempt to stop and pay for the item, this was captured by CCTV and provided to police.”

Mr McLaughlin said the sofa was later seized and returned to its rightful owner.

YOUTH COURT: Boy who stole two cars and a rifle from Croc Park

Later that month, a teenage boy who broke into Crocodylus Park twice in one week while on bail the previous September, stealing two cars and a rifle, pleaded guilty to a string of offences.

The 15-year-old, who cannot be named, faced the Youth Justice Court on December 20 where he pleaded guilty to burglary, theft and property damage after admitting to breaking into the business with two other teenagers.

The court heard the group climbed over an exterior fence and broke into an office building on September 14 and stole the keys to a LandCruiser which they then drove through a chain-link fence.

The heist was captured on CCTV and the trio drove the car to Karama where it was found damaged the next day.

CYRIL LAURENCE MURPHY: Nicked a $700, six-piece saucepan set

To start the new year, a man who stole a $700, six-piece saucepan set from a kitchenware shop in Casuarina Square narrowly avoided jail on compassionate grounds in January.

Cyril Laurence Murphy pleaded guilty in the Darwin Local Court to one count of theft after putting the boxed items in his trolley and walking away without paying in October 2019.

His lawyer, James Stuchbery, told the court it had taken some time for police to complete their investigation but “eventually the game was up” when he was “caught red-handed” on CCTV.

Mr Stuchbery said Murphy had now paid for the saucepans in full and prison would be more onerous for him because he was undergoing regular treatment for bowel cancer.

The 30-year-old appeared in the Darwin Local Court on February 10 where he pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing from the Stuart Park Sexyland store.

The court heard that on August 17 last year, Gladigau stole a neon blue dildo, valued at $89.95, from the store.

The following month, on September 20, Gladigau returned to Sexyland and stole $342 of items including; “a foreplay costume”, a “silver choker collar”, three pairs of ladies’ underwear, a singular ankle cuff, a black lace mask and a bullet vibrator.

CLINTON GOWLEY, VERONICA HUDDLESTON & CLINTON WUNUNGMURRA: Crooked trio who robbed old man on his birthday

Then in February, a trio of crooks who stole $170 from an elderly man who was out “looking for someone to say ‘hello’ to” on his birthday, pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court to aggravated robbery.

Crown prosecutor Hamish Riley told the court the 72-year-old victim had first driven to Palmerston on March 1 last year before heading to Casuarina Square.

Mr Riley said as the man drove past Clinton Gowley, 41, and his girlfriend Veronica Huddleston, 30, in the car park, he “appeared to be staring at Huddleston as if he was sexually interested in her”.

He said it was then the pair hatched a plot to lure him somewhere less public and rob him in a plan involving another man, Clinton Wunungmurra.
