UPDATE 2.30pm: A man has been arrested after he allegedly escaped police custody in Alice Springs on Friday night.

Police say Shane Williamson, 25, was located in a vehicle on Lyndavale Drive at 12:35pm.

He is expected to be charged with aggravated assault, and escape lawful custody.

EARLIER: Police are searching for a man on the run after he escaped police custody in Alice Springs on Friday night.

Northern Territory Police are seeking public assistance to locate Shane Williamson, 25, who escaped police custody around 8:40pm on Friday, after officers were called to a disturbance on Lyndavale Drive in which a man is alleged to have assaulted a woman.

Officers were in the process of arresting Williamson when he broke free and fled on foot towards Engoordina Drive.

Members of the public are urged not to confront Williamson if they see him, but instead contact police on 131 44 immediately.

He is described as an Aboriginal man, 180cm tall with a slim build, longish black hair, a full beard and moustache.

Anyone with information as to Williamson’s whereabouts is asked to contact police on 131 444 or report it anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
