A 28-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested following a high-speed pursuit which led to police finding the man “hiding in a tree” in the Darwin rural area.

Northern Watch Commander Tony Bennett said police attempted to stop a vehicle travelling at excessive speeds on Stuart Highway near Humpty Doo at about 4pm on Saturday.

“A short pursuit ensued through some rural roads with the vehicle becoming bogged on a dirt track,” he said.

“The offender ran from the car and into a rural address where he located a quad bike which he rode a short distance before taking off on foot again.

“Entering another rural property, the offender has approached members of the public and requested to be driven from the area.

“When he was turned down, the offender has attempted to take the vehicle however, he was stopped by the owner and adult son, and took off on foot.”

Sgt Bennet said the offender was tracked and located up a tree by the police dog unit.

The alleged offender was arrested and taken into custody.

Investigations are ongoing regarding several offences including, drug driving, stealing with violence and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
