HERE are some of the cars NT Police have seized for hooning this year, for reasons including burnouts, speeding, failing to give way and driving without number plates.

OCTOBER 9 – KATHERINE

TWO teenage boys, aged 13 and 14, were caught riding their motorcycles on a sports ground at about 9pm and were seen doing burnouts and damaging grass on the oval.

The motorbikes were seized for anti-hooning offences.

Superintendent Daniel Shean said: “These motorcycles have been observed by a number of Katherine residents causing a nuisance in the community and at times a danger to the public while out walking.

“Police had no hesitation in seizing the bikes to prevent repetition of the offences.

“Hopefully, having the bikes seized and having to pay towing and release fees might make them think twice about doing the same thing again.”

The man was issued with an infringement for failing to obey a give way sign, drive vehicle causing loss of traction and damaging the surface of a road or public place.

MAY 21 – KATHERINE

A MOTORIST who attempted to avoid a roadside breath test had his car seized by police.

At 9:45pm, a Toyota Landcruiser ute approached a RBT station on the Stuart Hwy in Katherine before performing what police described as “a harp U-turn”, executed a burnout and sped away at up to 160km/h.

Police found the abandoned vehicle in bushland a short time later, after the driver and his female passenger had fled on foot.

Police found a quantity of cannabis in the car.

The vehicle was seized for 48 hours under anti-hooning legislation.

The 34-year-old male driver was issued a traffic infringement notice for driving a vehicle causing loss of traction and three counts of speeding, including one charge for travelling at up to 45km/h over the limit.

He was also issued with a drug infringement notice and fined $2514.

MAY 27 – KATHERINE

A MEMBER of the public spotted a car speeding in a 60km/h zone on Riverbank Dr and then performing a burnout on Lucy St in Katherine.

The person contacted police, who identified the driver and went to their home and seized the vehicle.

Police allege the driver didn’t hold a driver’s licence and the car was unregistered and uninsured.

Superintendent Daniel Shean said: “When the public observes someone doing a burnout and is willing to make a statement to police, police will seize the vehicle and deal with the driver according to the law.

“Driving at dangerous speeds in a 60km/h zone and doing burnouts pose a danger to other road users and potentially pedestrians.

“This sort of driving behaviour will not be tolerated.”
