A PROFESSOR, who previously headed up NSW Corrections, has been appointed to independently review the Darwin Correctional Centre following a riot there last month.

On May 13, 21 prisoners left their cells, set fire to parts of the jail, and caused extensive damage to the facility.

Professor John Paget, an Adjunct Associate Professor at Charles Sturt University who holds a Masters degree from Sydney University Law School and a doctorate in prison design, will complete the review.

Prof Paget has had a lengthy career in custodial services, including holding the position of inspector, assistant commissioner and Correctional Services NSW chief executive.

Professor Paget was also the director of the Alexander McConochie Centre Project in Canberra, which was the first prison in Australia to be designed and operated under human rights legislation.

The independent review is one of three investigations into last month’s incident.

Attorney-General and Justice Minister Natasha Fyles said the review would be made public once completed.

“Professor John Paget comes highly qualified with a lengthy background in correctional services and prison design and operation,” Ms Fyles said.

“What occurred at the Darwin Correctional Facility on 13 May was unacceptable, and although it occurred behind the wire with no risk to the wider community the public expects it to be investigated.

“We will review all recommendations made to us in the report to be tabled by Professor Paget, but until then will be allowing all investigations to run their course.”
