A MAN woken by police after falling asleep at the traffic lights in Palmerston while almost four times the limit has walked from court with a fine.
Aggie Matthew Tom, 29, pleaded guilty in the Darwin Local Court to high range drink-driving after officers noticed him behind the wheel on Roystonea Ave in the early hours of October 17.

After the car failed to move off when the light turned green, police investigated to find him asleep at the wheel and woke him up for a breath test which recorded a blood-alcohol content of 0.196.
In sentencing, judge Michael Carey handed Tom a $600 fine and banned him from the road for 12 months.

“If you ever needed any indication you shouldn’t have been driving, it’s the fact that you fell asleep at the wheel,” he said.
“It’s probably very fortunate you fell asleep at the lights and not while you were actually driving down the roadway.”
