LAWYERS for a Territory cop charged with rape will have an opportunity to cross examine one of the witnesses in the case at a committal hearing before it proceeds to the Supreme Court.

The 37-year-old accused man, who cannot be named under NT law, stands charged with having sexual intercourse without consent, possessing ammunition without a licence and unlawfully possessing property.

On Wednesday, his lawyer Mary Chalmers successfully applied to cross examine one of the witnesses but the details of the questions she intends to ask him were suppressed from publication.

An application to cross examine another witness was refused.

The officer was arrested in late September, suspended from the police force with pay, and released on bail.

The offending is alleged to have been committed while he was off-duty.

The case returns to court on June 23.
