More than 100 fines were dished out to motorists over the long weekend as drivers flouted rules.

Motorcyclist caught going almost double the speed limit

MORE than 100 fines were dished out to motorists over the long weekend as drivers flouted rules, frustrating police.

Police have been left disappointed with the behaviour of drivers with cops handing out 85 tickets for speeding on just Friday and Saturday night.

Four vehicles were impounded for hooning on Tiger Brennan Dr on Saturday night.

Police allege the four vehicles were involved in drag racing.

Two of the vehicles were clocked at 144km/h, and the other two at 166km/h.

The incidents occurred within half an hour of each other.

Senior Sergeant John Ginnane said police also impounded a motorbike being driven by a learner driver.

“On Friday night we impounded a motorcycle after the 19-year-old learner rider was caught hooning and executing wheelies on McMillans Rd,” Mr Ginnane said.

“He was fined more than $2000 and lost 5 demerit points.”

Police also clocked a 33-year-old man doing 152km/h in a 100km zone on Tiger Brennan Dr while on Saturday night, a 16-year-old P-plater was detected travelling at 145km/h in an 80km zone on Pioneer Dr in Herbert.

He will receive a summons for driving at a speed dangerous to the public.

“Also on Saturday night, a 64-year-old man was detected riding a motorbike at 157km in a 100km zone on Tiger Brennan Drive and also returned a positive breath test. He’s received a Notice to Appear for speeding and medium range drink driving,” he said.

Sen Sgt Ginnane said a driver was seen deliberately losing traction of his vehicle while exiting a shopping centre in Palmerston on Saturday night.

He said police found a disqualified driver behind the wheel, who returned a breath test of 0.243 with passengers in the vehicle. He will be summonsed to appear before court.

“These are just some of the incidents we dealt with on the weekend. Police are well aware that this is V8 Supercars week in Darwin, and would remind motorists that because your motor vehicle is capable of travelling at excessive speeds, they are not compelled to demonstrate that on roads used by other people including families with young children,” he said.

“Driving is a privilege and a responsibility. This type of behaviour is completely unacceptable and puts the lives of everyone on the roads at risk. Police will continue to target unsafe drivers and hold them to account.”
