UPDATE 4.30pm: A SEVEN — YEAR — OLD girl remains in hospital in a critical condition after she was hit by a car in Alice Springs on Tuesday morning.

The child, whose injuries are unknown at the moment, was hit by a vehicle on Bloomfield Street, Alice Springs about 7.50am.

Police cordoned off the area between Ida Street and Bradshaw Drive for several hours while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident were conducted.

A Northern Territory Police and Emergency Services spokeswoman said police had spoken to a number of witnesses who had assisted police with inquiries.

In a statement released last week, Senior Sergeant John Ginnane said, “Our interstate visitors may not be aware that school zones are in effect all day on school days, and not just at pick-up and drop-off times”.

“Kids don’t have the same awareness of their surroundings as adults.

“It’s up to all road users to keep our kids safe and be prepared for the unexpected.”

Police target unsafe driving practices in school zones, including speeding, use of mobile phones, parking and obstructing crossings.

Police are continuing their investigations into the incident.

UPDATE 11.30am: A CHILD who was hit by a vehicle in a residential street this morning is in critical condition in ICU at the Alice Springs Hospital.

The child, whose injuries are unknown at the moment, was hit by a vehicle on Bloomfield Street, Alice Springs about 7.50am.

Police have cordoned off the area between Ida Street and Bradshaw Drive while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident, are underway.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area during this time.

Police say more information will be provided when it becomes available.
